Two tenure-track positions in Mathematics at DIM (2024)

Inquiries about this opening can be directed to searchcommittee2024@dim.uchile.cl.

The Department of Mathematical Engineering (DIM) of the University of Chile is opening two (2) tenure-track positions in Mathematics at the Assistant Professor level, starting ideally during the first half of 2025.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree at the date of appointment and are expected to present evidence of an outstanding research record and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. Candidates working in all areas of Mathematics will be considered, but preference will be given to those whose research is related to current research areas at DIM (see the webpage https://www.dim.uchile.cl/en/research/). The department will give priority to candidates doing research in the areas of algorithmics and combinatorics, mathematical mechanics and inverse problems, and optimization, but outstanding candidates in other DIM areas are also welcome.

Applications from all groups currently under-represented in academic posts are particularly encouraged. The department is strongly committed to improving its present gender balance, and particularly welcomes applications from women.

Duties include a moderate teaching load of five (5) one-semester courses every two years at an undergraduate or graduate level.

The department is associated with the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the University of Chile, which together with DIM constitutes a leading research pole for applied mathematics in Latin America. CMM conducts basic and applied research in mathematics and develops applied projects that employ mathematical modeling to solve problems in science, industry, and the public sector. DIM faculty have access to funding for scientific activities through CMM, and have the option of getting involved in and leading applied projects at the center.

Application deadline: For full consideration, all application documents should be received by August 30, 2024.

Notes:

1. Salaries are competitive at the international level and depend on the qualifications of the chosen candidate, including a salary complement from CMM. Additional salary complements are available from research grants and/or projects.

2. DIM faculty members receive basic support for research activity through CMM, including travel expenses and funding for students and postdocs. Successful candidates will be expected to apply to additional funding through the various research funding programs run by government organizations in Chile.

3. Although appointments are sought at the Assistant Professor level, exceptional applications may be considered for other ranks.

Application procedure:

Mandatory: read the bases. (pdf)

Prepare the following application materials:

    1. Curriculum Vitae, including a list of publications.
    2.  Extended cover letter, including motivations to apply.
    3. Research statement (*).
    4. Teaching statement, considering plans for undergraduate and graduate teaching at DIM.
    5. At least three recommendation letters referring to the candidate’s research, with at least one addressing the applicant’s teaching experience (*).
